Rovers suffer controversial shock defeat in EFL Trophy

Rovers faced Everton U21 in the EFL Trophy tonight, and suffered a shock 1 - 3 defeat despite leading in the 84th minute 1 - 0.

Nigel Adkins’ Tranmere Rovers lead by a goal to nill from the 11th minute until the 84th when Everton’s Beto equalised for The Toffees.

Just as it looked like the match was going to penalties, Everton took the lead in the 92nd minute, once again through Beto.

Finally, Sherif got Everton’s third goal in the 95th minute to secure the victory for Everton U21s.

There was a controversial decision made by the referee not to award a penalty to Rovers while the match was 1 - 2 to Everton for a handball. If scored, Tranmere would’ve been level and the match may have gone to penalties, or even possibly winnable for Rovers.

The controversy continues with the knowledge that Beto, Everton’s striker that scored their first two goals, is priced around £26m. It could be seen as unfair for players in League Two facing against a player of that value, but that is up for you to decide.

Ultimately, Rovers still have two matches left in the EFL Trophy group stage, and aren’t out of the competition yet. We’ll have to see what comes from those fixtures to decide if Rovers will progress in the trophy.
